Its hard to believe that it is 16 years since Cyril died. Time has
passed but he will never be forgotten by those that knew him. As a B
Coy member on that fateful day, I remember feeling so proud of his
actions, I also remember lying on the cordon and feeling empty, angry
and disgusted with my fellow country men (albeit terrorists) who
thought that what they were doing would achieve their aim! Time has
proven them wrong, I am sure they never expected soldiers with the
courage of Cyril and other members of the regiment passed and present

In memorial Ranger Cyril Smith QGM, The 2nd Battalion The Royal Irish
Rangers.
Murdered by the IRA in a proxy car bomb attack at a Permanent Vehicle
Check Point near Newry, County Down, 24 October 1990
Rgr Smith helped the innocent driver of the proxy to safety then aware
of the imminent explosion he re-entered the PVCP in order to raise the
alarm and ensure his comrades were safe.
His actions undoubtedly saved the lives of the civilian driver and the
other soldiers in the PVCP.
For this action Rgr Cyril Smith was posthumously awarded the Queens
Gallantry Medal.
