The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross has today, Friday 6 October 2006, been
awarded by The Queen to The Royal Irish Regiment in recognition of 36
years continuous operational service and sacrifice in Northern Ireland
by The Ulster Defence Regiment and the Home Service battalions of The
Royal Irish Regiment.
The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross (CGC) Second only to the Victoria
Cross, is a rare award for military gallantry and is held in the
highest esteem by the Armed Forces. It is the first time it has been
awarded to a military unit rather than an individual serviceman.
274 members and ex-members of The Ulster Defence Regiment, The Royal
Irish Regiment, The Royal Irish Rangers and Royal Irish members of the
Territorial Army died as a result of terrorist action in Northern
Ireland between 1971 and 2002.
"There have been many difficult years but our job is now done and
we march into history with dignity and with heads held high."
Colonel Mark Campbell

To Billy,
Still getting over the fact that there are reports that you may
possibly be married. Can you please pass my regards and best wishes on
to Ally and the rest of the troops.
Kipper, best wishes to you and Hannah, hope it all goes well.
RTB, remember I was a young ranger out in Cyprus and I can only
imagine what you and Billy were talking about. All the best to you
mate.

Today i spoke to the padre of 3 para who has just come back from the
sands and who has had so much to deal with and who in soldier terms is
a man's man. He spoke very highly of all our lads and this is one
of the things he told me," when the irish platoons first got
there they were in a fire fight for 7 hours being hit from 3 different
sides all at once and to a man they stuck it out and all walked away
job done " He also spoke of the lads so dear to us who did not
make it home and to there familys his love and prayers are with you
all. He knew them all and spoke of them as we would do. Just thought i
would share this all with you today. To the ones we lost so dear to us
all " YOUR LIGHT SHINES THE BRIGHTEST OF THEM ALL"
