Gentlemen come come now are you really surprised at the way RHQ R
Irish handled the closing of St Patricks Barracks. It means nothing
to them, they didnt train there most of them have never served there
until they became part of the great mushroom factory that is RHQ R
Irish. All those who walked in those gates a frightened young man to
walk out some 18 weeks later as a fully trained soldier full of pride
in himself and his regiment, remember what the Depot meant and the
memories that it held. I am sure you all remember well those immortal
words spoken by Gen Roger Wheeler, "The Regment is safe in my
hands", the rest is history. All of you can remember your own
time served with extreme pride in all you achieved and in the friends
you made. We have all stood at the graveside of friends who made the
ultimate sacrafice in the service of country and regiment, we lowered
them into the ground and then we drank to their memory in a fashion
unique to us. 1 R Irish continue to serve with distinction and their
exploits are well documented, The Rangers also continue to serve as a
TA Regt so we are still out there somewhere. I am sure all of you
could take a guess at the list of those invited to attend and yes you
are right to feel agrieved we all should, do we matter now!, did we
matter then! of course we do and we dont need some staff officer
tucked away in some office to patronise us. I was lucky to serve in
the regt and I made friends that will stay with me for life. Like you
I would hae felt proud to have marched across that square for the last
time, I was denied that pleasure as were you all. Dont feel any
anger, just feel pride in yourself, your regiment and your friends.

Rab. I understand the event was organised by the Mysterons. A shady
group operating out of an underground bunker at No4 Post! I seem to
remember a Pde a few months ago at the Depot, sorry, 'Flag
lowering Ceremony'. A few old and 'bald hid ourselves at
the guardroom (done a few days in there) We asked 'was this the
official closing of the Depot'? 'No' was the reply,
'this was for the civilian staff and another Pde would be held
at a later date'. The 3, or should I say 2 bald men and a Mod
(work that one out) replied 'how many flag lowering ceromoies
can you have as we understood that once the National Flag and the
Regimental Flag were lowered that was it, you could not raise them
again'. The response was like something from the Simpsons
'(shrug shoulders) Idon't know!!! I believe that between
now and 01 July 08 anything Royal Irish will have been erased from
history to appease the mysterons!!
sad day yesterday. depot holds many memories for many people, for one
reason or another. they must feel very highly of us! someones head
should roll!,we should all E-Mail RHQ with complaints, you never know
what could happen. failing that we all meet up in services club and
get dizzy. we dont need them to organise, do it ourselves.
yesterday was also my official last day in the regiment. feels good to
be a civvy!

John, who actually organized this clandistine event at the depot?
It's time to name names and formally shame these faceless
people. It will give us the oppurtunity to either ignore them, should
we ever meet, or to spit in their face, at least we'll have a
choice and even feel better!!!!

Good to see u on line Wilfie.
Assoc Readers - are any of the Associations planning an event to
honour the 40th Anniversary? Ballymena Parade and afterwards to the
Services Club?
Battalion readers - is the Bn planning anything that would be open to
Assocs? On camp at own risk and cost per individual?
Maybe this is one for the closed forum rather than the public
guestbook?... Gerry if u agree just move this post for me please.

all over the world, pity the bureaucrats didnt seem fit too let these
fine men close the gates behind them ... F.A.B

well well well, what can one say , let me start by this when you read
from what john downey has to say about todays events it shows you the
gutless people who run the RHQ. i along with brad tried to find a way
forward to establish our own club, with the museums, assoc functions ,
reunions parades , rehab, and aftercare for thousands and attended a
meeting at waring st 2 years ago in order to move the regimental assoc
forward in establishing our own club, creating jobs and look after
families whos husbands , sons, brothers ,sisters had given the
ultimate sacrifice or who had been injured during their time served ,
i was met with and who are you? as we`d have saved money instead of
jobs for the so called boys, and money going to waste, however with
the deafening silience 3 years on and the dispicable way that we once
again learn of our depot
has closed it once again brings to light that nobody in rhq committee
gives a shit, it is for these reasons i resigned from the assoc 5
weeks ago. i only hope that we move onwards and upwards without these
people , i voluntered to run the 40th Anniversary but as you can see
nothing has been done with less than a year to go to the date,
however i will endeavour to hold the 45th Anniversary myself and as of
now give yous all plenty of notice. i look forward to the response in
this matter and wish you all the best . my email is
