Leading up to the premiere of Martin Lynch's new play Holding
Hands at Paschendale, Greenshoot Productions is seeking any
information on or from surviving relatives of 10 Northern Irish
soldiers shot at dawn during the First World War.
They would be particularly delighted to have at the premiere of the
play at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast on Friday October 13, any living
relatives of the men as listed below:
Thomas Cummins (27), Belfast; Albert Smyth (32), Ulster; Peter Sands
(27), Abyssinia Street, Lower Falls, Belfast; James Crozier (18),
Battenburg Street, Shankill Road, Belfast; James Templeton (20),
Enfield Street, Belfast; James F. McCracken (19), Belfast; Bernard
McGeehan (30), Londonderry; Arthur Hamilton, St Peter's, Belfast;
J. Wishard (24), Omagh and George Hanna (26), Belfast.
Soldiers shot at dawn is one of the main themes running through this
play as it deals with the true story of Lynch's grandfather, who
was an arresting soldier in one such case.
The production company would be interested to hear from any relatives
or from anyone with any information or memories relating to the lives
of any of these men.
Anyone wishing to contact Green Shoot Productions should call 028 90

Helo all you Rangers. I have been watching this sight with interest
but dont feel qualified to make comments, having only spent a few
months in the regiment doing basic training at St Patricks barracks in
1970. However I would like to wish all who are on active service a
safe return and all those who have been injured, a quick recovery.

I would like to give an update on the condition of our son Alistair (
Ally) to his many friends. We have just returned to our own home for a
few hours on route to Inverness to look after our little grandson Owen
as Tracey is still with Ally in hospital.
He has been moved out of the critical care unit into a neurosurgery
ward. His overall condition continues to improve. Although there is
damage to the left side of his body, in true fighting spirit he is
very determined that when he gets transferred to Headly court he will
walk again. We will never be able to thank everyone who made his
recovery a little bit easier, to so many who made the very long trip
from Inverness to visit him, all the lads from ITC in Catterick, to
Dean Angel who flew from Spain in the morning and stayed with him all
day and flew home again that night. To hear Ally laughing again
amongst his many friends was something we never expected to ever hear
again let alone after a few short weeks. Martin Miller his old school
friend who rolled back the years and reminded him of things that he
would rather forget. To everyone who came to see him we (the whole
family) can never thank you enough. We would like to mention a few
very special people who have helped our family and Ally more than we
can ever say, Capt. Brian Johnstone the welfare officer and Capt
Phillip Patterson (the padre) who helped us through the early days and
became emotionally involved themselves. To Sharkey who spent so much
time with Ally and helped him through some of his darkest days. (The
McDonalds did the trick) To Richard Sheridan, you know why I will
never forget what you did for Ally. To Gillie, nothing was too much
trouble for you and you are still there for him and Tracey. And last
but by no means least to the Magill family Margaret, Jason, Matthew
and their families where would we be without the help and comfort that
you gave us over the last two month. There are many exceptional people
within the Ranger family and we are so proud to be part of it. If
it wasn't for them then Allys road to recovery would be so much
harder. Our son is one of the lucky ones who survived against all
odds, we would like to pass on our sympathy to the families of those
who didn't. There but for the grace of god.

Billy's words so far on this site have summed it up for all of us
in 1 R IRISH 'past and present'. Our lads that we lost in
the sands will never be forgotten as their spirit in Fort George will
never leave us. God rest their souls.
BILLY
Proud of everything you have done recently. A true RANGER.
